Updated for modern devices, Blox 3D City Creator is a sandbox that lets kids create and play with their own cities and towns. Kids place Minecraft style blocks to build roads, parks, and water, and then can place pre-made trees and buildings. The magic happens when they add people, cars, boats, helicopters and planes that bring the city to life as they walk, drive, and fly around. There are several pre-built areas to play with immediately, plus you can share (anonymously) and download other people’s creations.

Interactive Minds: Universe explores stars, galaxies and the structure and history of the universe itself through images and text, plus some videos and interactive models. The facts are suitable for a middle school audience, and the images are suitably vast and beautiful as the app tries to impart just how epic the universe really is. I particularly liked the solar system models not just of our own solar system, but of systems of planets around other nearby stars. The app contains no narration (or music), but does have a good amount of curated and accessible content, plus links to websites to explore further.
