Speedy Maths is a math quiz app, but one that distinguishes itself with the number of concepts included. The app goes well beyond the usual addition and multiplication, it also includes square roots, quadratic equations, logarithms, fractions, and more. Everything is presented in a clean text-based multiple-choice format with a question and four answers to choose from. You must choose the correct answer to progress, so you get immediate feedback and reinforcement of the correct answer. The app offers tips on how to quickly perform some mental calculations, but it is not a teaching app. Unfortunately, it doesn’t (currently) offer any customization of the quizzes either. Speedy Maths is worth a look for older kids looking to quiz themselves on more advanced math concepts.

Jigsaw Puzzle is a puzzle game for all ages with thousands of puzzles included. Select a puzzle theme and then an image, then choose the number of pieces from 9 for young kids, all the way up to 1000 for those that want a challenge. There are a lot of images, so many that there is a search feature included. For fans of Disney, there are puzzles of the famous characters and movie scenes. You can also create puzzles from any picture in your photo library. The actual process of putting together the puzzle works well. Pieces snap together and can be moved together, and also snap into place on the board if positioned correctly. You can keep all loose pieces in a tray on the side of the screen, or scatter them all over the board. There’s even a zoom feature, which is necessary when doing a puzzle with 1000 pieces as the pieces themselves are really small on the screen. While it isn’t the same as spreading out a real puzzle on a physical table, Jigsaw Puzzle does offer fans the ability to play anywhere in a well thought out package. Jigsaw Puzzle is available with an Apple Arcade subscription, which usually comes with a 30 day free trial if you haven’t used the service before.
My Town: Car Mechanic Game

My Town, the dollhouse app series, ventures into automobiles in the new Car Mechanic Game. Kids can select a car, select people and play with it in a small town. There’s a a gas station with a store, car wash with lots of features, a showroom, a parts store, and a mechanic shop for where kids can change tires and customize their vehicle. Along the way, there are all sorts of items to interact with, radios that play music, tools to play with, and more. The app is ad-supported, unfortunately with the kind of intrusive, timed, full screen pop-ups that interrupt play and are easy to accidentally tap on, although these can be removed with an in-app purchase.

Stakburn is a text-based flash card app meant for studying and memorizing information. You create a “stak” which is a list of cards and then enter text for the front of the card (the question), and the back of the card (the answer). You can then go through the cards to study. There are no built-in lists, and the app could really use an option to shuffle cards into a random order. However, in an age where a great many apps have very long privacy policies, The Web Workers provide a refreshingly simply one: they don’t track you or collect your personal information. Stakburn is a simple flash card app with no hidden surprises.
