App Friday October 22nd, 2021

This week we have one of the better times tables apps I’ve seen in a while, and a puzzle app that introduces the concepts of quantum physics. Focus on learning your multiplication tables with the frantic and fun Times Tables Hero, with its swipe left/right mechanic and full set of features. Plus, help a cartoon cat escape their quantum state while exploring, solving puzzles, and learning about quantum physics with Kitty Q.

Times Tables Hero helps kids quickly practice their multiplication tables in a novel and fun way. Kids set up a profile and then get a deck of cards, with each card containing an equation. They swipe right if the equation is correct, and left if it isn’t. You can customize which times tables to use, and even focus in on particular equations that a kid might need to practice. You can also let the app completely randomize the cards for a full mental workout. The game ends when you complete the deck correctly, or get four wrong answers. The app will then track which multiplication answers need more practice. The app tracks your best score and speed is rewarded with ranks, with kids earning hero rank if they can answer each card in under a second. It sounds like a gimmick, but the swipe mechanism really does work, and focuses on speeding up recall of multiplication tables with laser precision. Times Tables Hero is 50% off for the Halloween season. You can also check out their promotional video (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_k2fINXP4pE).

Kitty Q

Kitty Q is a puzzle game that introduces the concepts of quantum physics. Kitty Q is the embodiment of Schrödinger’s cat, being both alive and dead, and it is up to you to bring them back to full life. Schrödinger’s great-granddaughter helps with hints and explanations via an in-game phone. Kitty Q blends the puzzle adventure genre well with its topic. You’ll be exploring, finding clues and solving puzzles related to physics such as insects that only travel only the edge of a surface – mimicking electrical properties, or aligning magnets, which then unlocks further puzzles. Along the way, you obtain articles describing quantum physics, and costumes for Kitty, making it look a little less unsettling. Kitty Q is a fun educational game for older kids tackling a topic you don’t often see on the App Store, and remarkably it is completely free.
