Writing Wizard for Kids
By L’Escapadou

Writing Wizard, the excellent letter tracing app, has been updated with new shapes to trace, longer recordings and improved reports. Kids can practice tracing and printing upper and lowercase letters, numbers, and many built-in words with the ability to add your own words. There are shapes to trace for fun including cats, dogs, houses, squiggles, circles and more. Parents can see reports of what their child is doing and even play back a recording of how well they did the tracing, which is very illuminating. There are difficulty settings for the tracing itself, to make it easier or harder, plus a ‘game’ mode that progressively makes the tracing more difficult. It even comes with support for Apple Pencil. Writing Wizard is one of the more full-featured apps for learning to print letters, numbers, and words, and is an easy recommendation.

Times Table Ultra
By Bit Loopy Games

Times Table Ultra is a quiz app for multiplication and division tables. After setting a time limit, the multiplication tables to use, and whether to practice multiplication, division or missing place questions, kids jump straight into the quiz. The quiz includes a game with two spaceships racing each other, and where every correct answer gives a burst of speed to your spaceship. The app also claims to learn which questions are difficult for your child and focuses in on those questions. It comes with a graph reporting system that shows how well you are doing, and multiple user support. The graphics and design are basic, but functional. You can try the app for free, with an in-app purchase to unlock all content.

Pok Pok Playroom Coming May 20

The creators of highly regarded Alto’s Adventure are making a foray into kids apps with the new Pok Pok Playroom, intended to be a space filled with “educational toys that spark creativity, imagination and learning through open-ended play.”

This reminds me a lot of the early days of Toca Boca, so this new venture will be one to watch.
