iBiome – Changing Ice
by Springbay Studio Ltd.

iBiome—Changing Ice deals with climate change and the environment in the Arctic and Antarctic. Professor Bio guides kids to learn about the ecosystems in the colder regions of our planets, and what happens when the ice melts. There are mini-games involving putting together food webs of plants and animals, and attempting to prevent greenhouse gases from trapping heat in our atmosphere. Players are rewarded for listening to the descriptions with stars and can see plants and animals added to their screens as they build their ecosystems. There were some text-formatting errors on the device I tested it on, but overall it is an informative app for the child interested in ecosystems and climate science.

SOBE Stories
by Jeremy Swanston

So.Be Stories (social-behavioral) presents social situations for young kids starting school and a series of choices about how to deal with the situation that may lead to a positive or negative outcome. For example, another child is feeling left out on the playground, do you invite them to play or leave them alone and how do you talk to them? These situations are woven into loose stories, so after the children choose to play together, what happens if another child jumps onto the swing they were planning to use? There are five such stories, plus four more situations that teach being kind, helpful, responsible and safe. This is not a new app, but it holds up well.

Everyone Can Create in Science

This is not a science book, but rather a set of ideas for using the creative capabilities of mobile devices to have kids draw, photograph, create video, and even music and podcasts for science projects.
