Jubitron the Girl Robot!

Jubitron and her friends are holding a picnic in this storybook app, when it suddenly starts to rain, and then, as my son says, “plot twist”. It’s a well made story with excellent images, good narration, and word highlighting. There are interactive elements on every page with fun animations. This is an easy to recommend app for younger readers and currently on sale as of this writing.

Stick and Split
by Sunflower Learning Ltd

Stick and Split is a very clever times table app. Rather than directly quizzing kids on their multiplication facts, multiplication and division are turned into puzzles to solve. Numbers are represented as bars which you can combine and divide (stick and split), to form larger or smaller numbers. However, you can only combine like numbers to show how multiplication works. So you can add three 2s together to make 6 (2 times 3), but you cannot add 3 and 2 (3+2) together to make 5 as that is addition and not multiplication. The app contains 300 levels, with each level containing several number bars and a target number, such as combine 2s to make 6s. Each level becomes progressively more challenging, some with multiple different number bars (make 6 out of 2s and 3s), and some requiring division (make 6 out of 3s and 9s). The graphics and sound are serviceable rather than stunning, but it’s a great concept and works really well.

Solving the “Miracle Sudoku”

An impossible crime and a master detective – er, rather an impossible puzzle and a master puzzle solver. Yes, this is geeky, but it is also surprisingly entertaining, especially the revelations the puzzle solver goes through, like a good mystery.

“You’re about to spend the next 25 minutes watching a guy solve a Sudoku. Not only that, but it’s going to be the highlight of your day.”
