Happy App Friday

Watch a rocket blast off, float in orbit, stand on the moon and view the solar system with A-R Space, then create an unlimited selection of personal or instructive stories with Special Stories. Plus, the debate about screen time continues, and making pictures talk with Talkr Live.

We would like to thank Julie Brannon who has been volunteering to run our Twitter feed for many years, and is working on her last App Friday this week. We wish her all the best.

AR-kid: Space is an augmented reality look at four different space related topics. A cute robot guides you through a rocket launch, a look at the international space station in orbit, the moon landing, and the solar system. The first three are the most impressive, being able to walk around a rocket, look down at the Earth as you float in orbit, or see the astronauts as you stand on the moon. It’s very well done — one of the better AR experiences I’ve seen and actually left me wanting more.

by Special iApps C.I.C.

Special Stories is a clean, no-nonsense app to create simple stories (slideshows). Each page in a story consists of pictures from your photos, text, and voiceovers. Stories can then be played back with simple navigational controls. Stories can be exported and shared with others, or printed out. Special iApps offers several pre-made stories (sets of images only) that can be imported if you choose to register the app with them. Special Stories supports adaptive switches, the OpenDyslexic font, and includes the ability to lock the app to a story to prevent accidentally exiting the story. Special iApps produces a series of apps for those with special needs, including Special Numbers and Special Words.

What Do We Know About the Effects of Screens on Students?

This question gets asked every time new technology is introduced, but it is still worth asking what we gain and what we lose when screens are everywhere.

Talkr Live

After the story last week on kids and cute animoji videos, I was informed that there’s an app that can do that for your own pictures. Just for fun, make any picture with a human face talk with Talkr Live (works best with newer iPhones).
