Play and Learn Science
by PBS KIDS
Play and Learn Science explores science concepts centered around water, weather, shadows, and simple physics. Each activity is interactive, so when learning about shadows, kids can change the angle of the light, or guess which object is making a shadow. Other activities include playing with a stream of water to fill a dog bowl, similarly to popular early mobile physics games, or choosing clothing to suit the weather. Everything about the app is high quality, and definitely worth a look.
Stellar: Reward Charts
by Day One Design
Stellar is a simple reward chart app. Create a chart for your child by naming the chart and a promise of the activity the child will perform (clean room, do homework, practice, etc.) Add stars after each activity (naming the activity stars if you like) and after ten stars the child earns the reward. It’s a simple motivational strategy, but sometimes simple is good. In the free trial version you can set up a single person and activity, while and in-app purchase opens up multiple accounts with more than one concurrent activity.
Papumba Playtesting
Papumba had early childhood reasearchers look at their Papumba Academy app’s effect on learning, with a focus on developing logical-mathematical thinking (grouping and comparing things). While the study is quite small, it is very encouraging to see this sort of work being done.
