High School Girls Make Mobile Apps for Science Education

This past weekend, 520 high school girls pitched over 100 mobile apps at the Technovation Challenge Pitch Competitions. When I walked into the lobby to preview their apps, I was stunned. Apps for improving our environment, sharpening our chemistry skills, taking care of our pets, expanding our political knowledge, and eating healthier were all displayed by these talented students. When I wonder what the world is coming to, I’ll think about these kids and their creative solutions!

This team created an app called "Healthy Bytes" to encourage healthy food substitutes in recipes.
This app helps students learn chemistry compounds, and their poster outlined the target market and reasons for "going mobile".
Here is the team pitching for an app called S.O.S.: Save Our Species. They opened with a slide show of endangered animals.

The toughest challenge was to pick a winner. I found that every app idea had real-world potential, and hope all teams have a chance to take their ideas to market.

  1. Hope some of these teen apps types will be available soon. Most the apps out there and on App Friday are geared to elementary. Would be nice to have some for the older crowd.
