My Robot Mission has kids designing and driving robots to complete missions in augmented reality. Each mission involves navigating a course and overcoming obstacles with your robot. The fun comes with designing the robot, by choosing the power core, arms, tracks, solar panels, saws, and much more in order to complete the mission. Do you choose legs, wheels, or tracks for a sandy environment? How many parts can you attach before your robot becomes too heavy, or requires too much power? Kids then get to drive their robot across environments in AR, using an on-screen joystick along with the camera on their iPhone or iPad to find the best path to the goal, and to overcome obstacles such as fallen trees or broken bridges. As the excellent in-game narrator says, the game is all about experimenting with different designs to find out what things do and what works best in different environments. Kids choose the number they want and then draw the number with their fingers using the on-screen guide, and then are presented with a variety of simple activities designed around the number. The activities include finding objects that add up to the number, finding the numbers themselves, finding objects with patterns that match the number, or inserting the number into a simple equation. The activities are different for each number, but the same each time, so that may reduce the longevity of the app. The design of the app is clean and colorful, with good narration and interesting activities. Young kids can play with the numbers 1 to 5 for free, with a single in-app purchase to unlock all of the other numbers.
