Droplets: Drops for kids
By Planb Labs OU
Droplets lets kids from 7 to 16 learn words in other languages with a five minute a day approach. There are an impressive number of languages included in the app from French to Mandarin to Samoan and more. The five minute limit is intended to keep kids focussed and trying to learn as much as they can in those few minutes. During those five minutes, words associated with a particular topic, such as food or family, are introduced, along with the pronunciation, spelling and an appropriate illustration. The app then reinforces the word through quiz like games, such as matching the word to its image or spelling the word. Droplets has a clean and easy to use design, and the pronunciations seem clear and understandable. The app is free to use, but subscriptions are available for those that want more than five minutes a day, or want to skip topics.
TrueWorld Maps
By Emmanuel Teisaire
TrueWorld Maps is a straightforward app with a single purpose: to show the true size of countries around the world. Since the Earth is a sphere, the most common flat map representations of the world tend to distort the size of countries nearer to the top and bottom of the map, making them seem much larger than they are. TrueWorld shows kids a map and invites them to search for a country or simply tap on it on the map, then drag the country around the map to show how it changes size and even shape as you move it towards the top, bottom or middle of the map. You can move multiple countries around to see size comparisons plus get some brief information about the country. Trueworld Maps shows ads on the map screen, with an in-app purchase to remove them.
