Bedtime Stories – Read & Tell
by Little Light Studios GmbH
Bedtime Stories contains a collection of stories, plus lessons on story structure and prompts for creating your own stories. For each (text only) story, you get the story itself and a breakdown of the structure behind the story. Additionally, there are audio lessons on different aspects of story creation, and a randomizer that will generate a basic structure for your own stories in several different genres (fantasy, animals, etc.), although it doesn’t provide a place to type in your stories. The app requires a subscription to access the stories, with a seven day free trial provided. Helpfully it shows your membership details (under More…), and provides a link to manage your subscription if you wish to cancel before the free trial ends.
Trilo Image Spelling
by Trilo Interactive AB
Trilo Image Spelling offers a twist on the typical spelling app by encouraging kids to draw while they learn. A word is written and spoken, then the child is asked to draw a picture to go with the word, and finally they spell the word. As encouragement, short videos are played after a given number of words. There are a lot of words to draw, divided into categories such as food and transportation, plus levels of difficulty within each category. The app doesn’t check if the image relates to the word, and some concepts may need extra creativity to draw so some parental involvement may be required.
Unboxing Videos
“Unboxing videos are exactly what they sound like: People opening boxes and narrating their actions.”
We all like new things, even when it’s someone else sharing the excitement of something new. One of the most popular channels on YouTube is about a child unboxing toys. Common Sense Media shares some thoughts on unboxing videos and what to do when our children discover them.
