App Friday August 10th, 2018

Happy App Friday!

We hope everyone is having a great summer.

We’re rejuvenated, refocused, and ready to return to the world of educational apps and children’s media. We’re kicking off our return to the back to school season with the incredible Khan Academy Kids, learning a little cursive writing with Cursive Writing Wizard Starter, and then winding down for the evening with No More Noisy Nights.

Khan Academy Kids is a free (no ads, no in-app purchases) early learning app covering letters, numbers, reading, colors, shapes, patterns, animals, emotions, and more. As you can tell, there’s a lot of content in the app, and thankfully it is consistently good, high-quality stuff. My only reservation – you are required to supply and verify an email address before using any part of the app. Otherwise, Khan Academy Kids is definitely worth a download for preschool or kindergarten age children.

Learn cursive writing by tracing letters, numbers and whole words. The process of writing each letter is broken down into animated steps, and instant feedback is provided when tracing. An in-app purchase unlocks all the letters and the ability to create your own lists of words (one of the best features). I suspect this app would be most useful when using a stylus instead of tracing with your finger, but it does allow you to create and print out PDF worksheets to practice writing on paper.

What does a mole do when he moves house and finds his new residence haunted? Make friends of course. No More Noisy Nights is a children’s book (not an app, but also available as an ebook) filled with beautiful, cozy illustrations and a story that contains just the right amount of charm, repetition and silliness that my son appreciated when he was a preschooler.
