App Friday: Colorific, Lumi’s Book of Eyes, iLearnWith Poko, Animal Colours, Penelope & Princesses Learn Chinese

Welcome to App Friday, our weekly link exchange of family-friendly apps. We have a lot of free and specially-priced content choices, ranging from coloring activities –  to eyes, animals, languages and addition. Poorani’s post earlier this week is a great guide for putting technology to use. What conversations can we have with our children while using these apps? It could be a family coloring contest, a discussion on how eyes work, or maybe number games or name-that-animal. At Moms With Apps, we want to emphasize the iStuff as an opportunity for conversation. Right on – now let’s get talking!

What are your apps about?

Colorific – Colorific is a drawing and coloring iPad app for children. The app allows kids to draw on a blank “sheet”, or to color one of the multiple (40+) templates from a variety of different categories: numbers, animals, transport, professions, dinos etc. Designed by a talented and passionate artist, the templates are a great fun to color. Painted and colored pictures can then be saved on iPad and shared with friends. The application boasts of beautiful design, easy-to-use and kids-friendly interface and enjoyable background music.

Lumi’s Book of Eyes – Lumi is an adventurer out to teach children all about health and he would love it if your children could join him! Learn all about eyes from around the world on a variety of animals, and why your child should also take care of their super special eyes in our interactive storybook. Then play I Spy an Eye with Lumi, helping him to determine if what he sees in photographs from his journeys are eyes, or something else!

iLearnWith Additions – This is a math app to explore numbers and learn additions by playing with toys. Children can play different games such as counting bowling pins, group sets of blocks, or identify and add different objects. Clear directions, verbal and visual reinforcements will help children learn basic math.

iLearnWith Mighty Jungle Animals – This is an app to explore one of the children’s favorite subjects: Animals. Play with the cheerful animals from the Mighty Jungle to learn about physical appearances, sizes, living environment, eating behaviors or sleeping habits… The game requires attention and answering questions while teaching children about animals!

Animal Colours Volume 1 Our app is a set of flashcards with images of animals. It’s different in that it’s part of a series of apps; they are grouped by colour, and the animals are not your usual barnyard collection. The illustrations are simple, but the animals are not too cartoony, so toddlers learn to recognize them, and to say the words in any of the three languages (English, Spanish & German).

Princesses Learn Chinese exposes children to Mandarin Chinese words and expressions through stories, games and songs. In each book, children learn around twelve new words or expressions in Chinese. Learning comes through a story-based approach: helping children understand Chinese expressions in the context of a familiar story narrated in English. Games and songs reinforce the learning. Princesses Learn Chinese is designed and tested by multilingual parents and educators who aim to inspire children to learn new languages. (NOTE: This app includes In App Purchases)

Penelope the Purple Pirate – Adventurous children whose imaginations know no bounds will find a kindred spirit in Penelope. Come along on her journey as her bedroom opens up into world of pirates, the open sea, buried treasure and trusted friends. Discussion questions, ideas for additional interaction for the pre-school classroom and home, and fun facts about the sea creatures in the story are included in the app.  Chosen as a Top 10 Must-Have eBook by lilsugar of Popsugar, a Top 10 Educational iPad App by Digital Storytime, In the Top 25 iTunes Book Apps and “What’s Hot” in iTunes Books.
