The other day my daughter pulled out a worn 1958 copy of The Cat in the Hat Comes Back for story time. From the first phrase, I found myself immersed in the role of reading and rhyme – after all, “this was no time for play, this was no time for fun, this was no time for games, there was work to be done!” The work of reading can be FUN, and Dr. Seuss consistently uncovers that magic for both parents and children while immersed in his world. Through the efforts of Oceanhouse Media, Dr. Seuss’s content is available on the iPad.
I realize that we continue to debate books vs. apps, and apps vs. books, and how it all impacts the path toward reading. But I believe it is the enthusiasm for reading, regardless of the medium, that will make the ultimate difference to my daughters. My voice and intonations, booming out those seriously cheerful Seussian phrases, are moments that matter.

My son learned to read by memorizing the rhyme in The Cat in the Hat and other Dr. Seuss books!
I absolutely agree with you. If kids are enthusiastic about reading, regarless of the medium the are reading on, that will build on itself and create a love for stories. My first grader also loves the Dr. Seuss apps from Oceanhouse Media – they have done a wonderful job of staying true to Dr. Seuss’s original stories, but creating a fun interactive experience.
